The German Christmas market is the spiritual home of the festive fair and there’s nowhere better to get fuzzy on vats of hot wine than the northern city of Bremen.

Opening times Mon to Sat 10am-8:30pm, Sunday 11am-8:30pm.
Nearest airport Fly into Bremen City Airport, which as the name suggests, is located in the city center.

Wander through the city center from Old Town Square to Wenceslas Square, stopping off at red-canopied wooden huts for wooden toys, embroidered lace and traditional Christmas decorations.

Opening times Daily 10am-10pm, food stalls are open until midnight.                                              Nearest airport Prague Airport is around 17km away from the city. Hop on the Airport Express shuttle bus to get to Prague Railway Station, or use the bus no. 100 or 119 to reach the Metro rail, for onward travel through the city.

Nearest airport  Dusseldorf Weeze airport is a whopping 85km from the city, but flights are cheap and there’s a direct bus that takes just over an hour. Failing this, Dusseldorf International is only a quick S-Bahn (suburban railway) trip from the city.

Nearest Airport Ostend-Bruges Airport is situated just outside the town of Ostend but also serves Bruges, some 33km away.

Munich Christmas Market – the “Original” – is the oldest Christmas market in the city. The origins of the Christmas Market are reported to date back to the so-called “Nicholaus Markets” of the 14th century. Town records first mention a “Nikolaidult” that took place near the Beautiful Tower in Kaufingerstrasse in 1642.

Opening Times Monday-Saturday : 10.00-21.00 Sunday : 10.00-20.00 (Christmas Eve : 10.00-14.00)

Manchester hosts several markets throughout the city, from a German-style market at St Ann’s Square and French-themed stalls at King Street. You’ll find arts and crafts at Exchange Street, and an international Christmas market at Brazennose Street with a globally-sourced selection of jewellery, leather goods and speciality foods.

Opening Times All other market zones – which takes in Brazennose Street, St Ann’s Square, King Street, Exchange Street, Exchange Square, New Cathedral Street, the Corn Exchange, Market Street, and Cathedral Gardens – will open from 10am-7.30pm from November 10 and throughout the month, and then from 10am-8pm from December 1-20.

Nearest Airport – Manchester and its approx 11miles to the centre
